Use of unapproved IUDs more widespread
OB-GYN Associates was nailed by the RI Health Department last week for giving its patients non FDA approved IUDs. The products came from Canada and were less expensive than devices approved here in the US, allowing the practices to make a hefty profit.
Now it seems they weren’t alone. The Department of Health says a “handful” of other practices in Rhode Island have admitted to doing the very same thing. DOH is not releasing their names until it completes a thorough investigation.
Is this just common practice to make a buck? Or some sort of coordinated effort? We don’t know yet.
The health department also hasn’t determined how effective these non approved IUDs are. In the meantime, women with the devices should use another form of birth control.
