Yet another medical practice admits to using non approved IUDs

July 3, 2010

Update- Dr. David A. Carcieri from North Providence and Dr. Cynthia M. Hanna have also admitted to using the non approved devices.

The Department of Health has posted another medical group that’s admitted to using the non FDA approved IUDs.  Partners in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inc. from Pawtucket is the latest to join the growing list.

When I called the FDA, the spokeswoman would only say the federal agency is “working on” figuring out whether the devices offer effective birth control.  She couldn’t give me a timeline for when the FDA would know more about the IUDs these doctors ordered from Canada. Others I’ve spoken to say there’s nothing wrong with the IUDs; they’re just cheaper because they’re sold in another country, but they are made in the same factory as FDA approved devices.

I’m working on a feature that will go into more detail about this issue.  Expect to hear more next week.
