Lay-Offs at Blue Cross Blue Shield
I guess Blue Cross really meant it when it said finances were tight.
Rhode Island’s largest health insurer is eliminating 103 jobs- 45 vacant positions and 58 current employees.
BCBSRI says the decision was difficult but, “we have an obligation to our members to ensure that we are operating as efficiently and effectively as possible. ”
BCBSRI’s spokesperson only offered a news release, saying the company is not offering interviews. It’s not clear which positions have been eliminated.
The lay-offs come less than a month after Blue Cross received a 9.8 percent rate increase. The company had requested increases around 13 percent.
Blue Cross Blue Shield reported a one hundred million dollars loss in 2009.
Blue Cross has been losing members over the past few years, making its per capita administrative costs higher than its competitors.
