RI in top ten of lowest % of uninsured residents

July 28, 2010

With its 11.8% rate of uninsured residents, Rhode Island ranks #10  in the latest census data on the percentage of uninsured people by  state.

Our neighbor Massachusetts ranks far above us at #1 with a 7.8% uninsured rate following the state’s health care overhaul.

The folks at the bottom are Texas (26.8%) and New Mexico (26.7%)

The data, which was collected in 2007, does not capture how many people were uninsured following the country’s economic collapse, so its accuracy is anyone’s guess, but it’s the most accurate picture we have.

Kaiser Health Foundation’s comparison of uninsured rates by state is  slightly different because it uses less factors to estimate the uninsured rates.  RI ranks #14 in that list at 11.3% and MA is still #1 with a  5.4% uninsured rate.
