Goodbye Dr. Gifford

February 18, 2011

Today is the last day on the job for Dr. David Gifford, the Director of the RI Department of Health.

Gifford resigned from his position suddenly in January, saying it was time for a change.  Felice Freyer with the Projo has a nice exit article about Gifford, where he talks about the frustrations of protecting the health of Rhode Islanders with a shrinking staff and a limited budget.

Governor Chafee will announce Gifford’s interim replacement today Update: Chafee’s office says it won’t be naming anyone today.  We’ll hear about the interim director at some point before Gifford’s Official last day on February 24th.  ( I’m hearing rumors it might be Peter Simon, but no confirmation on that.)  I’m hoping to chat with Gifford myself later today, so I’ll post more on what he says if I manage to catch him.
