Caritas is wooing more hospitals

February 23, 2011

Remember Caritas Christi, the Massachusetts Hospital chain that left Woonsocket’s Landmark Medical Center at the altar?   According to the Boston Globe, the newly named Steward Health Care System (the management for Caritas now that it’s owned by a private equity firm) is  setting its sights towards hospitals not in Rhode Island, but Florida.

Steward… sent a letter of intent Monday, offering to take over the financially troubled Jackson Health System in Miami for $600 million in cash and $500 million to cover debt…

Jackson owns six hospitals, including its flagship Jackson Memorial teaching hospital, which has lost $350 million in two years and is on track to run out of cash by summer. The hospital treats a large number of poor and uninsured patients and handles most of the city’s trauma cases.

The Globe describes this move as the first step towards giving Caritas a national reach. What do you think- does that mean Caritas might be still  interested in Landmark, or has the now private entity moved on?
