What can RI learn from Maine’s medical marijuana dispensaries?
I’m back from a long weekend reporting on the medical marijuana dispensaries in Maine. The so called “Vacationland” also has a law establishing state sanctioned, non profit medical marijuana retail stores.
The major difference is Rhode Island will award up to three compassion centers licenses next Tuesday, and Maine awarded its licenses last year- six in July and two in September.
So Maine was the natural place to go to see what Rhode Island can expect from its compassion centers about half a year into the future. I’ll offer a more complex comparison as a part of my three part series on compassion centers in RI, but I’ll give you the short answer now– not much.
None of Maine’s dispensaries have opened yet. They’ve been tied up in red tape, Not In My Back Yard (NIMBY) sentiments, financing complications, and in some cases failed partnerships.
Is this Rhode Island’s fate too? What do you think?
