What’s Chafee’s plan for RI’s compassion centers?
If not that, then what?
It’s been more than 3 weeks since Chafee put a hold on RI’s compassion centers and he doesn’t seem any closer to a decision on what to do next. Here’s the complete audio of my very brief conversation with the governor. Below is a transcript of the confusing part-
The Pulse: Would you consider filing a lawsuit the way the governor in Arizona has?
Chafee: Well to me, the law is pretty clear that it’s a threshold of where the Justice Department is going to prosecute. And that might be where we want more clarification. What is that prosecutor threshold? (laughs) Is it a couple of plants at home? Is it a compassion center? Is there any clarification the Justice Department could give?
The Pulse: Have you gotten any clarification?
Chafee: No, but we’re moving in that direction.
The Pulse: Any sense of the time line for…
Chafee: It seems as though the clarification does not include compassion centers so that’s where we are right now.
So, the governor says the law is pretty clear, but he’d like some clarification? I’m so confused.
If you listen to the full audio, Chafee does say that he’s meeting with the lawmakers that wrote Rhode Island’s compassion center legislation. I’m not sure what that meeting will accomplish. Maybe he’s hoping to find a way to satisfy the needs of patients without passing the “prosecutor threshold.”
What do you think will happen? What SHOULD happen?
