Civil union licenses ready to go
The Department of Health is pretty confident Rhode Island lawmakers will pass a civil unions bill today. Health officials have already designed and printed out a small batch of civil union licenses. Tomorrow the forms will go out by courier to every city and town in Rhode Island
Spokeswoman Annemarie Beardsworth says the form “pretty much looks like a marriage license except it’s gender neutral.” She says there’s a spot for “person A- Male/Female and person B-Male/Female.”
The Health Department decided to plan ahead because the documents have to be printed on special paper and and officials don’t want to disappoint anyone anxious to form a union during the holiday weekend.
What happens if the law doesn’t pass? Annemarie Beardsworth says the documents aren’t dated, so cities and towns could just keep them on hand in case they need them in the future.
