Will RI follow New Jersey’s lead?
My email in-box was buzzing yesterday with hopeful emails from members of Rhode Island’s medical marijuana community. They’d all heard the announcement from New Jersey Governor Chris Christie that he’d let the growth and distribution of medical marijuana move forward despite warnings from the federal government.
Other states have also continued their medical marijuana programs since a series of letters from U.S. Attorneys said marijuana dispensaries were open to federal raids. But Christie’s announcement holds particular weight because of his background as a former U.S. Attorney and his earlier opposition to the state’s medical marijuana law.
Will Christie’s announcement give Governor Chafee the confidence to lift his hold on Rhode Island’s compassion centers?
When I called the Governor’s office for a comment his spokesman says he’s waiting on guidance from legal council before he responds. I’ll post what he says as soon as I hear back.
