South County interested in buying Westerly Hospital

April 20, 2012

I’ll admit that I haven’t paid as much attention to Westerly‘s receivership as I did with Landmark Medical Center. I didn’t write about L&M’s bid on the hospital, or the other potential buyers.

But this press announcement caught my interest. South County Hospital, the scrappy independent medical center in Wakefield, is interested in buying Westerly Hospital. This from South County’s CEO Lou Giancola

We sympathize with the Westerly community and the hospital staff; we know they are suffering the uncertainty that this process creates for all concerned… We also know how much Westerly Hospital means to its community.

At the same time, we recognize that the issues underlying Westerly Hospital’s current problems reflect the forces impacting all community hospitals and require innovative solutions.

We have, therefore, notified the Special Master responsible for Westerly Hospital’s affairs that we are interested in seeking a solution that links the two communities to maintain their access to health care that is non-profit, community-based, high quality and affordable.

South County isn’t making any huge commitments yet. The press release acknowledges the other Westerly bidders and says it is merely in the “very early stages of determining the shape and feasibility of a combined health care delivery system.”

Is this how the state’s community hospitals will survive, by combining forces? Let me know what you think of a Westerly/South County partnership.

South County is a very humane hospital. Compare the light-filled, pleasant rooms and the kind staff at South County with the dungeon-like rooms and the You’re just a number to us attitude at RI Hospital. So I hope if they combine with Westerly that attitude remains.

South County has inadequate financial resources to support a failing Westerly. End of story.
